A wonderful book full of pictures/history of South Norfolk
This is a terrific book that contains hundreds of pictures and a brief history of South Norfolk, Virginia - now a part of Chesapeake, Virginia.

The book contains photographs from the 1880s to the 1960s and is divided into the following parts: Downtown South Norfolk, Business and Industries, Goverment and Public Safety, Churches, Residences, School Days, Sports Teams, Portlock, People and Points of Interest and Winter Memories.

The book does a great job of including most everything of import. This book is definitely nostalgic and is a must if you grew up in South Norfolk or spent any time there.

Standing on a Volcano: The Life and Times of David Rowland Francis
Published in Hardcover by Missouri Historical Society Pr (October, 2001)
Author: Harper Barnes
Average review score:

As exciting as a spy novel
Journalist Harper Barnes' biography of David Rowland Francis,
American politician and diplomat whose career ranged from St. Louis in
America's heartland to the depths of Russia during the Bolshevik
revolution (1917-19), is full of surprises. As the youngest mayor of
St. Louis and governor of Missouri at the turn of the 20th century, he
lead progressive Democrats and fathered the St. Louis World's Fair in
1903-04. Appointed ambassador to Russia by President Woodrow Wilson, he
endured terrible hardships during its revolutionary period, aided by his
articulate and loyal friend and valet, African-American Philip Jordan.
Much of the Russian story reads like an exciting spy novel. Wonderfully
researched and well written, it is a compelling account that enriches
both United States' and international history. It captivates the reader
and offers heretofore unknown insights into not only a remarkable
American but United States foreign policy at a pivotal time in world
history.

A wonderfully uplifting read!
If you can get hold of a copy - send it to me! This has to be one of my all time favourite books. It brings back the magic and romance of star-gazing and makes you wish you could go back to those simpler, less troubled days. It's a long time since I read Starlight Nights which charts the life of Peltier from his childhood memories through to his mid-somethings. Anyone got a spare copy? Please??

Story of Corn
Published in Paperback by North Point Press (July, 1999)
Author: Betty Harper Fussell
Average review score:

A persuasive treatise on a pervasive food...
A fun, crammed compendium on how this food became ubiquitous--like the apple in our diet. It's forms and functions are seemingly unending. You'll be surprised how much and in what ways you've consumed it. Stock photos, quotes, recipes, postcards: a loving scrapbook and historical tale of corn. If you're a cook, you'll love it. It's like a year of Gourmet magazine with every issue on a different facet of corn. A fun gift to give.

Straight from the Heart (Harper Monogram)
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Harper Mass Market Paperbacks (January, 1996)
Author: Pamela Wallace

Just as good as the movie
I'll admit, I'm one of those people that see the movie first, then read the book. Although this book was published in 1996, the movie adaptation was not made until 2003, shown on the Hallmark Channel. It starred Teri Polo and Andrew McCarthy in the lead roles. I have always been a true romantic at heart and ever since I saw the movie last month I've wanted to read the book. Finding such an old book was hard but I am thoroughly glad I did. Zoey is a strong career-minded woman who wants to get married and have a family. Her reluctant boyfriend challenges her into answering an ad for rural single men. She ends up on a plane to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and meets Tyler Ross, a rancher who is not all that thrilled at meeting any female, let alone one from New York City. He has his own inner demons he's dealing with. Zoey is not thrilled either, but the beauty of the land keeps her there along with free roaming mustang horses. There are a few bumpy roads but once you finish reading this book you'll believe the sometimes life doesn't always turn out the way you planned and love can happen more than once in a lifetime.

The Streetcars of New Orleans
Published in Hardcover by Pelican Pub Co (October, 1975)
Authors: Louis C.and Charlton, Harper P. Hennick and E. Harper Charlton
Average review score:

The Quintessential Transit Book
Authors Charlton and Hennick wrote a masterpiece. This is the Bible for New Orleans streetcar history, with many facts, anecdotes, maps, and photographs. Every era up to 1965 is covered: the rise, heyday, and fall of animal, steam, and electric traction in Louisiana's largest city. It fills a gap in transit information by taking us beyond the famed St. Charles line.

Succeeding As a Self Directed Work Team: 20 Important Questions Answered
Published in Paperback by Mw Corp (January, 1993)
Authors: Ann Harper, Bob Harper, and Ann Harber
Average review score:

KEYS to succeeding with your own Self-Directed Work Team
What I liked about the book is that it's easy to read, filled with information, goes to the point in concicely and simply answering 20 questions on Self-Directed Work Teams (SDWT's if you prefer). The 20 questions are answered.. but what I also liked.. in that each chapter ends with "Questions FOR YOU" -- so the book becomes really hands on.

If you would like a "preview" of the questions... they cover everything going from what Self-Directed Work teams are (naturally...) to keys for success, benefits for the organisation AND for the team members, the roles of team members, managers and supervisors in the Work team, how to get started and I could go on. Actually, the Business Book Quality Digest called it "the best quick introduction to self-directed teams" -- it may very well be!

Swan Dive: A Novel of Suspense (Harper Novel of Suspense)
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (July, 1988)
Author: Jeremiah F. Healy
Average review score:

The other Boston Private Eye
"Swan Dive" by Jeremiah Healy is another very satisfying John Francis Cuddy mystery. A good fast paced story with gritty, colorful characters and an abundance of violence. Makes me want to read his next outing "Yesterday's News". Was well worth my hunt to find this out of print copy.

Sweet Passion's Pain

Sweet Passion's Pain
In my opinion an excellent historical romance, well written, with excellent historical detail; an entertaining and compelling story of enduring love and passion without being overly repetitive, inaccurate or repugnant. For lover's of actual historical events mixed with a great love story, you will really enjoy this book.
